requests.exceptions.SSLError: [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed (_ssl.c:590)

Description

This bug surfaced on an AWS machine Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS (HVM), SSD Volume Type - ami-d05e75b8 which we were trying to use for the DREAM Hackathon. I built Python 2.7.10 on this machine and guess that the problem is due to some issues with the libraries with which it was compiled or their configuration.

Duplicate of SYNPY-314, which was resolved by upgrading Python (and in the process upgrading OpenSSL, which probably did the trick).
